UPR-MAPS Program

Location: UPR - Medical Sciences Campus
Due Date: February 15, 2023
Stipend: 5,400.00
Travel: 500.00
Description: The Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) in Molecular Aspects of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the UPR (UPR-MAPS) will fund eight (8) undergraduate students for a 9-week summer research experience. Recruiting will be focused on underrepresented and first generation college students with limited opportunities for STEM research experiences while showcasing meritorious scientists and their graduate programs at UPR. The students will also participate in a variety of skill building activities designed to develop their professional abilities to succeed in graduate school and beyond. In addition, all students will experience a multiethnic work environment with the chance to learn English and Spanish, while being immersed in stunning tropical sceneries and the diverse bilingual Puerto Rican culture. UPR-MAPS’s REU Site focuses on the fundamental areas of pharmaceutical sciences (non-clinical), which is inter- and multidisciplinary by nature (figure above). Specific STEM areas include (i) natural products chemistry based on marine biodiversity for the discovery of small molecule structures (ii) organic chemistry for the synthesis and purification as well as (iii) solid-state chemistry for the crystallization and structure elucidation of organic molecules, (iv) expression of proteins to design new molecular structures via biochemical methods, (v) analytical chemistry to characterize the resulting new molecules, crystals, materials, and processes at different length scales (nano, micro, macro) to un-derstand how molecular structures (vi) lead to new amorphous and crystalline materials with remarkable properties (materials science) that require (vii) novel chemical engineering concepts (e.g., process in-tensification, 3D printed solids). The research projects are focused on these fundamental STEM fields that define the interdisciplinary pharmaceutical sciences.
