Internship Opportunity in Forest Ecology

Location: El Yunque National Forest
Due Date: November 14, 2019
Stipend: 600.00
Description: The Uriarte Lab at Columbia University in New York City is recruiting two interns to re-census trees in hurricane damaged plots at sites in El Verde Field Station in El Yunque National Forest, Carite State Forest in Cayey and Cambalache State Forest in Arecibo. The goal is to see how fast tropical species recover from hurricane damage. This position is perfect for applicants looking to gain experience with fieldwork, plant identification, and standard forest ecological field methodologies. Interns will work on different projects, tree census of damaged and undamaged areas ranging from 300-600m elevation, and installing and remeasuring dendrometer bands (metal dendrometer bands are installed on trees to obtain precise estimates of diameter growth) across the forest. Following training in census protocol and dendrometer band making, the volunteers will work in the forest in teams of two or three individually, spending long hours in the field (8 am until 4 pm, Monday-Friday, with weekends off), often in wet and muddy conditions and on challenging topography. While in Puerto Rico volunteers will have the opportunity to learn about diverse aspects of tropical ecology from scientists involved in the Luquillo Long-Term Ecological Research Program. Free accommodation at El Verde Field Station in Puerto Rico. Housing is communal using shared resources. The field station works with a generator since we don’t have power, is relatively isolated and transportation is available on a limited basis.
