Ocean Sciences NSF-Research Experience for Undergraduates Program

Location: Monterey Bay, California
Agency: California State University, Monterey Bay
Due Date: March 13, 2017
GPA: 3.00
Stipend: 5,000.00
Description: CSUMB offers a REU program for a 10-week period, from June 8th to August 14th, where students will collaborate with mentors at host institutions to develop hypothesis-driven projects and receive critical feedback from mentors. Over the summer, students complete their own independent research project under the supervision of their research mentor, as well as complete a suite of professional development workshops and training. Students will engage in reviewing original literature, formulating a hypothesis, understanding study designs, testing hypotheses, and conveying their research to a scientific audience. Depending on their research interests students can choose to work with mentors at one of our partnership institutions: California State University, Monterey Bay, Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve, Hopkins Marine Station of Stanford University, Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, Moss Landing Marine Laboratories or Naval Postgraduate School. Research topics vary from: Oceanography, Marine Biology and Ecology, Ocean Engineering or Marine Geology. Students receive a $5,000 stipend in addition to support for travel, room and board, and post-REU support to attend conferences and in applying to graduate programs. The program encourages applications from student groups historically underrepresented in the Ocean Sciences and preference is given to applicants who are rising sophomores or juniors, but any undergraduate can apply.
